Tunisia Tourism On The Rise
Good news for Tunisia as recent figures show a 5.7% rise in visitors to the country over the past ten months, with a healthy figure of 5.5 million tourists arriving to stay in the country this year. The recent figures have provided a welcome moral boost to the tourism industry, which is a key source of income for the North African country. The 2011 uprising and transition to democracy has led to the country struggling to return to normal, so the increase in visitors has given hope to those who rely on the tourist trade for a living. Tightened Security Measures Tunisia has certainly had its share of unrest since the toppling of the autocratic leader President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, and the chaos within neighbouring Libya has resulted in botched attacks by Islamic militants. The unrest is mainly due to a standoff between the ruling Ennahda party and the opposition, and with the governing party stepping down later this month, the country should then return to peaceful times. Tunisia has responded positively to Islamic provocation by tightening security measures on hotels and protecting its visitors. Many of the visitors have commented that they have at no time felt unsafe and were determined to enjoy Tunisia luxury holidays Tunisia's' Amazing Heritage While Tunisia has long been considered a top destination for beach resort holidays, the country also contains an amazing heritage with some superb archaeological remains. Little remains of the great city of Carthage, but what does is very well presented and a must-see for visitors to the country. Dating from the sixth century BC, Carthage was the base of a hugely powerful empire extending across the entire south Mediterranean, and after being destroyed in the third Punic War was then redeveloped by the Romans. Monastir and Sousse are both well-known beach resorts but are also towns with historical heritage. Monastir can trace its history back to the time of Hannibal, famed for crossing the Alps to battle the Romans, and has an interesting museum and fortified monastery, while Sousse is a UNESCO World Heritage site. El Jem is also worth a visit to explore the remains of the Roman amphitheatre. Unique Country Although it has been feared that tourism will be affected due to the troubles in this small North African country, many of the tourists are return visitors, enchanted by a country that can offer so much to its visitors. The Mediterranean Sea coastline provides the perfect beach holiday for sun and sea lovers with some of the best beaches being found in Djerba, Sidi El Mekki, and Sousse. Desert trips are also becoming popular with visitors and there are now luxury train journeys taking passengers into the desert mountain landscape.
