The Louvre Abu Dhabi Looks To Capitalise On Art Community
Abu Dhabi is known for its luxury holidays and cultural innovations. Nevertheless, by 2015 it is looking to open its Louvre Abu Dhabi, which will house art pleasures from all over the world. With its huge $650 million price tag, it’s one of the most ambitious projects coming out of Abu Dhabi in the next few years. Moreover, additional news from its new cultural district is set to boost Abu Dhabi as a global tourist destination. The inspiration for the Louvre Abu Dhabi obviously comes from its French counterpart in Paris, but a 2007 cultural partnership between the UAE and France helped to set the idea in motion. Whilst it will take its name from its 12th century counterpart, it will not take much else. Rather than the 12th century architectural wonder, which once served as the palace and home of King Louis XIV of France, it will take the form of a modern mushroom-shaped building. French architect Jean Nouvel released his plans for the building, while other news coming out of the Arab state revealed that it would also become the centrepiece for a new cultural district set to rejuvenate Saadiyat Island. Currently, further details of the cultural district on Saadiyat Island have yet to appear, although as 2015 grows closer the culture ministry should release further details about what will help support the museum. By building this cultural landmark, it should boost the attractiveness of Abu Dhabi luxury holidays by giving the destination something new. It should aid the Arab state in attracting a completely new audience that is interested in more than sun and fine dining. Unfortunately, the museum is a few years behind schedule and should have already opened. However, the new date of 2015 is solid and tourism companies anticipate no setbacks, especially after reliable organisation Arabtec received the construction contract. Work on the new complex has reportedly begun with temporary galleries, plazas, and alleyways. The designers intend the whole complex to feel as if it is a city floating on the sea. The spectacular roof will filter and shield visitors from harsh sunlight with its geometric lattice form. It is expected to serve as a major meeting point for visitors looking to relax in the facility. In preparation for the grand opening, the museum is already creating a permanent collection, as well as a selection of art treasures borrowed from 12 French museums, including the legendary Louvre. This latest news on the progress of the Louvre Abu Dhabi comes alongside exciting news of its connections with India. At a recent trade fair, the state had a stand that was larger than ever before. Its relentless promotion and the success of Arab states surrounding Abu Dhabi have all contributed to helping its tourism industry get up off the ground again, after it took a major hit from the global financial crisis.
