Mauritius Arrivals Fall For First Month Of 2013

Mauritius has reported arrivals for the month of January fell year-on-year by six percent. The reasons for the fall remain unclear, but many theories put it down to the usual post-Christmas downturn in the West, the continuing economic fragility, and national festivals in countries like China.

The Indian Ocean island is not particularly worried about these disappointing figures as they already expect to make it up in the coming months. Furthermore, they also experienced a downturn in January last year, but they still managed to maintain their high numbers of arrivals for the year.

This sun-drenched location is a paradise for Europeans, and it is the country's most important source market. Statistics Mauritius said arrivals had fallen from 98,837 in 2012 to 92, 894 in 2013, a total drop of 13 percent. On the face of it, this is extremely serious as two thirds of arrivals come from Europe.

However, the continuing debt crisis throughout the Eurozone means money is not as abundant as it used to be. Europeans have been forced to take holidays closer to home, or even avoid taking them at all. The current situation has hit Germany hard due to its presence as a major player in the Euro recovery effort; German tourists are an extremely important section of the market.

Representatives from the Mauritian government remain confident of the country reaching its target of one million arrivals in 2013 due to its shifting emphasis to Asia and Africa.

Even in these new markets, there are issues with bringing in tourists at this time of year. For a start, money is naturally in less abundance in January because of major holidays like Christmas where people spend their money on family and friends, as opposed to additional trips abroad.

Preparations for the Chinese New Year have also stunted growth in China where tourism is beginning to boom as Chinese citizens gain more freedom. Regardless of these downsides, Mauritius luxury holidays have still done well in January as arrivals from Asia have risen nine percent. Unfortunately, this still translates to just 7,914 people arriving in the country throughout the month.

The government in Port Louis has been putting more and more effort into bolstering its tourism campaign in order to compete successfully with its regional rivals like Madagascar, the Seychelles, and South Africa. Lately, it has attended a global carnival in the Seychelles where it sent a colourful and exciting delegation.

At the end of 2012, the country also gained a significant publicity boost because of various reports highlighting the economic freedom of the country. Mauritius was named as one of the most economically free countries in the region. This level was primarily reached because of various government policies, but it also put weight behind its tax collection efforts. These efforts helped to boost the country’s revenues considerably.
