As quickly as one of festival moves out of Dubai the next one moves in right on its heels. That was seen again this week as the seventh annual Dubai International Wood & Wood Machinery Show opened in the modern UAE city on April 3, 2012. It is the premier industry event for the timber trade and woodworking and machinery sectors in the Middle East. This year the show consists of 9000 m² of floor space featuring more than 400 exhibitors representing 34 countries. It's being held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

For 2012 the show is important on a number of fronts including the fact that it is the largest show since it first opened in 2005. What started out as a small gathering of just 75 exhibitors from 15 countries has grown into a global event showcasing the finest woodworking equipment and specialised timber in the world. For Dubai it is a means of enticing new investment within the industry as well.

Show officials are expecting more than 8000 visitors to participate in equipment demonstrations, seminars detailing the latest woodworking techniques, technology exhibitions, industry round-table discussions, and more. Also new to this year's event are national pavilions from 22 different countries including France, Germany, Italy, and Austria. The idea is to showcase the woodworking industry in those countries as a means of exposing contractors and other professionals to different ways of doing things.

Dubai Welcomes the Visitors

As is the case with every special event in the emirate, Dubai luxury hotels are welcoming guests with open arms and their customary flair. Hotels close to the Convention Centre are obviously the busiest during the event, but with 8000 or more participants expected most of the city's hotels will be near capacity. That's not unusual in a city that regularly plays host to the world's largest luxury shopping festival, an Arabian horse show, an ever expanding world-class art show, several major sporting events, and more.

Contributing to Dubai's success in recent years is her national airline, Etihad, which just announced a 28% increase in profits for the first quarter of 2012. The airline reached a deal earlier in the year that gave them operational control of the troubled Air Seychelles and a subsequent portion of their revenues. Furthermore, the airline has agreed to pick up some of the routes left open when Air Seychelles cancelled all long-haul flights. Etihad is now one of the primary carriers between the UAE and Indian Ocean regions.

From both an economic and tourist standpoint everything seems to be going right in Dubai these days.
